In Cambridgeshire, England, a lottery winner named Barry is being tracked after leaving an undisclosed but "significant" amount of money in a check in a supermarket shopping cart.
The check was discovered by conscientious citizen Richard Haslop at a local branch of British grocery chain Tesco. Now Haslop has launched a social media call to reunite "Barry" with his bounty.
Haslop told ITV News Anglia that the cart contained six lottery tickets for both the UK National and EuroMillions lottery draws, plus one check being issued to Barry Levet. The check is of “significant value,” Haslop stressed.
It's unclear if the check is a novelty size often used at lottery promotional events, or a more conventional size.
Anyone know Barry?
“Does anyone know Barry Levett? The reason I ask is that my wife found lottery numbers in a Tesco trolley [cart] and we want him back,” on Facebook Wrote Haslop.
The campaign has generated a lot of interest on social media. But so far, Levett has kept his identity secret.
私はBarry Levettで、私の妻もそうです!」と、あるFacebookユーザーは言い切ったが、明らかにそうではない。
Hislop said he would ask respondents to "provide a description of where the ticket was kept" in order to identify the real Barry Levett from potential imposters.
Stories of lottery winners losing their winnings through reckless spending are common, but leaving it in the supermarket basket seems unheard of.
lost ticket
It's not uncommon for a winning ticket to be lost, making it impossible to claim the right to win big.Last year, the Daily Mirror reported that British couple Martin Tott and Kay Tott had divorced after the pressure of missing out on the £300 million jackpot caused a rift in their relationship. The Totts spent five years chasing the jackpot through court, to no avail.
British people seem to need to be more careful when buying lottery tickets.A resident of that septard isle holds the world record for unknowingly missing a lottery jackpot.
In June 2012, £6 million tickets sold somewhere in Hertfordshire, just north of London, expired without a winner.Despite nationwide publicity, no winners emerged within the 6380-day deadline, and the prize money was redistributed to charity.
