Inflation remains high in the UK and the lingering economic strain is affecting the casino ecosystem. Two properties recently announced closures: Birmingham's Broadway Casino and Nottingham's Corner House. One is already under control, the other is part of the Genting Casinos chain and is shutting down to cut losses before it's too late.
Birmingham's Broadway Casino has been in trouble for the past few years, initially struggling due to COVID-19.It was temporarily closed to meet health policies set by the government during the pandemic.
The casino closed permanently last December after it was unable to find a buyer to pay off its debts. In early February, management took over and began examining the facility's inventory and assets to determine liquidity potential.A sale of the assets is currently underway.
Broadway Casino opened in 2005 and offers a casino floor, poker tournaments, live music and more. This casino is owned by Clockfair Limited, which also owns the Shaftesbury Casino in West Bromwich. The casino is still open and there is no news of a possible closure.
The latest figures put inflation in the UK at around 10.1%.This is slightly better than the 12% reported in December.
Genting closes corner house
After a month of deliberation and discussions with employees, Genting has decided to close its Corner House casino in Nottingham. The decision was based on "commercial considerations" and casino members received a text message notice of the closure earlier this week.
Genting has also been hit hard by COVID-19. Three years ago, the company began laying off some employee jobs, citing a pandemic shutdown.
The company has no plans to close the other 34 casinos.Members who frequent Nottingham facilities can redeem rewards and points at other stores.
Feedback on the closure is mixed, according to the Nottingham Post.Several interviewees were astonished to find it easier to gamble online. And while some were unfazed by the withdrawal of the casinos, they expressed disappointment about what would happen to jobs in the area.
For now, local gamblers have other options. In Nottingham, Grosvenor Casino and Admiral Casino remain open.
