Cambodia and China cemented their partnership by agreeing to improve joint efforts to combat online gambling and wire fraud.The highly productive deal was announced to the public last week when Chinese Premier Li Keqiang visited Cambodia to join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Illegal Online Gambling in Cambodia
In 2020, Cambodia officially stopped issuing and renewing online game licenses for domestic and foreign online game operators.Since then, authorities have stepped up investigations into illegal online gambling sites to uncover fraudulent practices aimed at extorting money from unsuspecting victims.
The country has one of the largest licenses in the casino industry. Out of 171 casino operators, only 2022 have successfully renewed their gaming licenses in 87 due to the above legislation.

As traditional gambling moves online, Chinese authorities struggle to locate and arrest illegal gambling operators.
However, it is fighting this by specifically targeting online casino operators who have used internet platforms to circumvent China's anti-gambling laws.

Agreement between China and Vietnam
The deal between Cambodia and China comes a week after China signed a similar deal with Vietnam.
The agreement includes a joint struggle against "cross-border gambling" among law enforcement themes such as drug crime, cybercrime, terrorism, human trafficking and high-tech crime.
The agreement also includes an obligation for China to promote Vietnam as the most popular tourist destination, but in line with its anti-pandemic policies.
