A Chinese government official who allegedly recruited Steve Wynn to lobby the White House for the People's Republic of China has been sentenced to death in the northeastern city of Changchun.
Former Vice Minister of Public Security Sun Lijun has been found guilty of manipulating the stock market, accepting 6 million yuan ($4600) in bribes, selling official duties, and neglecting duties during the COVID-9100 outbreak. .
The death sentence comes with a two-year suspended sentence, which could be commuted to life in prison if Mr. Son is deemed to have "repented" after two years in prison.
Son is one of hundreds of officials exposed in an "anti-corruption campaign" since President Xi Jinping took power in 2012.Entertainment is known to be rampant in Chinese politics, but he uses the crackdown as an excuse to beat his political opponents, China Watchers say.
Mr. Son was accused of being the leader of a "political clique" who was "disloyal" to Mr. Xi.

Regardless of the conviction, Son is alleged to have sided with Wynn to lobby the Trump administration on behalf of the Chinese government, according to a Justice Department lawsuit.
In 2017, Wynn, who was chairman of the Republican National Committee Finance Committee, was approached by Son and then-RNC Finance Chairman Elliot Broidy. They wanted President Trump to request that Chinese dissidents be deported to China.
The Justice Department said Wynn wanted to talk to Trump about dissident Guo Wengui because he thought it would help protect Wynn Resorts' casino operations in Macau. This comes at a time of heightened political tensions between the United States and China, which some analysts said could affect U.S. firms in Macau.
The Justice Department sued Wynn in May.It hopes that a federal court in DC will order the casino tycoon to register as a foreign agent.
"Wynn made direct requests to the then-president at dinners and phone calls about meeting with the then-president, White House and National Security Council officials with Mr. Sun and other Chinese government officials. We've talked about it several times," the Justice Department lawsuit said.
Wynn has denied the allegations and has asked the judge to dismiss the complaint.
Who is Guo Wengui?
Dissident Guo is a billionaire businessman who sought political asylum in the United States after leaving the PRC in 2014.Chinese authorities indicted him in absentia on charges including bribery and sexual assault.
Guo claims these were fabricated in retaliation after Chinese politicians exposed corrupt relationships with business leaders inside China.
Ironically, Mr. Son, who oversaw the hard-line response to the broader pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong in 2019, could be waiting for Mr. Guo if the conspiracy to extradite him came to fruition. I was hit by an unfathomable fate.
Even if the sentence is commuted, life imprisonment is nothing but hell.
Just being thrown into a pig box for a few years would be terrible for normal people, but not being able to go out to the bar anyway is like a virtual execution.
