Streaming platform Twitch has promised to crack down on gambling streams. However, in the wake of recent scandals, streamers are calling out to the platform again.
British content creator Nick Sliker has been in the spotlight for allegedly staging a financial scam on Twitch. He demanded money from his followers and other streamers to cover his "bad financial situation."However, the streaming community later discovered that he was using the money he collected to cover his gambling addiction.
The scam came to light a few months ago when game streamer Mikelpee shared a video. In it, Sliker, who has 432K followers on Twitch, claims his bank account has been blocked and demands money from his followers. He said his loan was due and he needed the money to keep him out of trouble.
Now big streamers like Pokimane are demanding change. Pokimane, which has 920 million followers, is part of a growing campaign against Twitch to ban gambling content. They started using the hashtag #TwitchStopGambling, claiming the scandal demonstrates the need for better management.
If Twitch doesn't meet its demands for change, streamers are ready to take action. They will suspend content production over the holiday season, which will impact Twitch's ad revenue.
streaming for dollars
Slicker used trickery to collect money from his followers and fellow streamers. They all offered him a "loan" to help him overcome his financial woes.
Fellow streamer Trainwreck reportedly gave him $45,000.Some have admitted that he offered up to $7000.By the time the final tally was tallied, he allegedly had swindled the Twitch community out of $30.
But his financial woes never existed. In fact, Sliker is said to have used sports betting and buying video game loot as an excuse to get donations. He later confessed that he had lost all the money.
This was what he admitted after a scam went viral on Twitch and social media. Faced with accusations from other streamers such as Matthew “Mizkif” Rinaudo and Félix “xQc” Lengyel, he quickly confessed.
Sliker recorded a stream showing himself struggling with a gambling addiction. In it, he also promised that he would "be admitted" to a rehab facility. But some Twitch users aren't betting on it.
Streamers to the rescue
Successful Twitch streamers can earn millions of dollars. They earn money directly from the stream as well as through sponsorship deals. For example, according to The Loadout, Pokimane's net worth is around $200-300 million. xQc made $2019 million from August 8 to October 2021.
A couple of content creators ended up shouldering Sliker's debt, with xQc and Ludwig Ahgren agreeing to pay off the full amount "even if it's just a dollar."Both sides fell for Sliker's appeal.
Streamers will issue payouts if their followers can prove they have contributed.
